Each month, Paladin recognizes the outstanding work of our security officers through internal awards called the Superstar Awards. During the week of October 11th to 17th, also known as Healthcare Security and Safety Week, we especially want to acknowledge our courageous, caring, and hardworking Healthcare Security Officers.
Healthcare Security and Safety Week 2020
The International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) has presented this year’s theme for Healthcare Security and Safety week as “Heroes”. These heroes may not wear capes, but they do wear PPE!
Working throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, our Healthcare Security Officers have stepped up to aid other frontline healthcare workers as they battle the coronavirus. From providing exceptional customer care to ensure all patients are comfortable, especially when their families cannot be with them, to assisting isolation zones and pre-screen stations, our Healthcare Security Officers have certainly gone above and beyond.
Paladin Security’s Superstar Awards
To show our appreciation for the commitment and care our Healthcare Security Officers are displaying towards healthcare facilities, patients, and visitors, we want to highlight a few of their incredible stories.
Every month, our branches go through nominations submitted by our clients, members of the public, and employees, for the Superstar Awards. Those who are selected will receive one of three awards as a result of their heroic actions. These three awards are:
Performer of the Month
This award is based largely on the aspect of Customer Service. This person consistently maintains and generates a positive environment for those working with and around them.
Performance of the Month
This award is usually a result of a heroic action. This may be a situation where a security officer went above and beyond the call of duty in an exciting or unusual circumstance.
Unsung Hero
This award recognizes security officers who are reliable, hardworking, and vital to their site. These individuals give their utmost effort day in, day out to represent the company with pride and integrity.
Below are Superstar award-winning stories about our inspiring Healthcare Security Officers.
Vancouver, British Columbia
Performer of the Month: Alena - August 2020
Nominated by: Mental Health Team at Hospital
Alena is an invaluable part of our team. She is friendly, reliable, and diligently aware of what is happening in every space she monitors. Her many years of working with our team has allowed her to build relationships with both clients and staff, and this enables her to consistently go above and beyond in her work. Alena has made it a priority to know our clients by name and to remember their histories and risk factors. As a result, she is able to quickly inform staff when she notices any concerning behavior.
Alena has also been instrumental in saving the lives of at least 3 individuals who have overdosed. We have no doubt her astute performance has also prevented an innumerable number of potential incidents before they develop. Alena is a calm, competent, and engaged professional, who understands our clinical practices and procedures. As staff, we feel very secure in knowing that when Alena is on duty, things are under control. She is an absolute asset to our team, and we value her presence here immensely.

Unsung Hero: Jamaell - September 2020
Nominated by: Client Service Manager
Jamaell has proven to be an asset to both Paladin and our client. Anytime I have gone to the site, Jamaell is there with a huge smile on his face and a positive attitude. His team leader has expressed he is one of the strongest Healthcare Security Officers he has ever had the pleasure to work with. This site is particularly difficult because of the demographic of clientele, but Jamaell handles it with ease and excels in making everyone around him feel comfortable. Recently, we received a call from a member of the public expressing her gratitude:
Jamaell was so kind and respectful towards my mother who was at the ER. He even went the extra mile to bring her right to the car in her wheelchair. Jamaell is very pleasant to speak with, and I felt like I was meeting someone who truly understood what we were going through.
I look forward to seeing how far Jamaell will go in his career with Paladin and law enforcement. He truly is the definition of an Unsung Hero.
Toronto, Ontario
Performer of the Month: Qasim - August 2020
Nominated by: Supervisor of Security Operations
While on routine patrol at the hospital, Healthcare Security Officer Qasim discovered a patient who was wandering astray. He approached the patient and discovered they were hearing-impaired. Qasim utilized his critical thinking techniques and resorted to alternative measures by grabbing a piece of paper and asking where the patient needed to go by writing it down. He then ensured the patient made it to the necessary destination inside the hospital and returned to his patrol. It takes a well-versed security officer to realize some situations will require unconventional methods. Excellent work, Qasim!
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Performance of the Month: Sanchit - September 2020
Nominated by: Client Service Manager
While security is tasked with maintaining safety and security at hospitals, they also go the extra mile to make the experience of coming to these sites as easy as possible for visitors and patients. It was brought to Sanchit’s team’s attention just how important this role can be, when a mother took to social media to praise the efforts of Sanchit for making her daughter’s visit to the hospital less scary.
The mother recalled Sanchit approaching them weeks earlier when her daughter was at the hospital for her broken arm. Additionally, she mentioned how Sanchit helped make her experience easier when they returned weeks later to have the cast removed. As the mother described within her post:
He made her scary day brighter by talking kindly to her, getting her to smile, and even giving her a chocolate bar, which is something he didn’t have to do! After she cried from being sore from the cast removal, all my daughter could talk about was how it was so nice of him to make her feel more comfortable.

Thus is like the hospital I work into kids will come in scared of the hospital we make them feel welcome like we are family it’s great to be able to put a smile on the little ones face instead of seeing them scared and crying myself i am a father and grandfather and and now what it’s like when they are hurting and scared and it’s like nothing like seeing them smiling and laughing of the fear of a hospital
