Vancouver Winners!
Performer of the Month
Simon Doran
Simon joined the Royal Centre team in May of 2010 and within a very short time had quickly demonstrated that he understands what The Paladin Difference is all about. Simon’s professionalism, strong work ethic and customer service-oriented attitude soon marked him out as a natural leader. He’s always pleasant to the tenants, contractors and public at Royal Centre, and knows everyone by name which is saying a lot as the numbers can go into the hundreds. Simon is very diligent and efficient in his day-to-day work and, although things can get overwhelming and stressful at times at such a busy site, Simon always remains cheerful and positive in his interactions with his peers. His operational knowledge, leadership abilities and exceptional people skills have been vital when Simon has been called upon to act in a supervisory role. Simon, you’re knocking it out of the park…keep doing what you’re doing!
Performance of the Month
Keven Kidd & Shane Yorke
On February 14th, a day that will be forever etched into the minds of Kevin and Shane, Security received a call from one of the buildings onsite reporting a body had been spotted in a remote area of the site. Site Supervisor Keven and Security Officer Shane tried to get more information from the caller but he said he had just heard the information second-hand. They were given a description of the person who saw the body and began searching for him to find the exact location of the body. They found a person who confirmed he had seen the body and who agreed to lead Security to the area which was well hidden. Upon confirmation that there was in fact a body onsite, our team followed their site policies and procedure for such an event and contacted both the RCMP and CSM to inform them of the situation, while maintaining a reasonable perimeter around the body for scene preservation. As anyone can imagine, this was a trying situation for everyone involved and a tragic one at that. However, Keven and Shane remained composed and responded with tact and integrity, earning them this month’s Performance of the Month award. Well done guys and thanks for being such consummate professionals.
Unsung Hero
Alex Kiss
Nominated by his fellow Paladin Security Officers which says so much in itself, Alex is a steady, hard working, reliable and loyal member of the Paladin family. Although Alex goes about his work in a very quiet and unassuming fashion, he takes his job very seriously and has been vital to the success at his site. Alex, your solid effort day-in and day-out has been an inspiration to your fellow Officers onsite and it shows. A very deserving Unsung Hero this month.
Winnipeg Winners!
Performer of the Month
Jerry Desjarlais - The Pas
Jerry has been with Paladin since June 2010 and initially started working in our Events division where he excelled early on. His exceptional performance was immediately recognized by Paladin management who soon promoted Jerry to Event Supervisor. When a Supervisor’s position came open in our Corporate division, Jerry was one of the first candidates to interview for the position. Despite the fact that this promotion would mean Jerry would have to move his family to a northern location in The Pas, Manitoba, Jerry was more than up for the task and has since blossomed in his new role. In fact, on only his second shift, Jerry and another Paladin colleague encountered an individual with an apparent knife wound. Thanks to their training, Jerry and his partner were able to provide immediate care to the individual before getting him more intensive medical attention. Jerry, your professionalism continues to amaze us, and we appreciate the fact that you constantly seek out extra training and advice when needed. Keep doing what you’re doing!
Performance of the Month
Wayne Macumber - The Pas
Jerry also nominated one of his Security Officers at The Pas, Wayne Macumber, for the Performance of the Month award this month. Jerry nominated Wayne as he says he is one of the most dedicated and reliable members in the Paladin family, and he is very well respected by fellow Security Officers and the client alike. Wayne sets an example for others to follow through his hard work and the pride he takes in wearing the Paladin uniform. Wayne, huge thanks from Jerry and us all here in the Winnipeg office for your dedication not only to Paladin but to the entire community in The Pas also. Good job!
Unsung Hero
Chris Brown - WRHA
An incident occurred recently at one of our WRHA sites involving a CFS child visitation when an adult became agitated and threatened to inflict harm to those around him. A call was immediately placed to 911 and the WPS and paramedics were dispatched to the scene. Security Officer Chris Brown in conjunction with two CFS employees responded to the situation at an exceptional pace and in an appropriate manner given the sensitive circumstances, resulting in a safe resolution for everyone involved. Excellent work Chris, these situations are difficult at the best of times but you handled this incident with poise and maturity. A very deserving Unsung Hero indeed!
Edmonton winners!
Performer of the Month
Alice Melnyk - University of Alberta Hospital
Alice is one of our valued Patient Watch staff working at the University of Alberta Hospital who perfectly exemplifies The Paladin Difference on a daily basis. This past month while performing her regular duties at the hospital, Alice noticed a patient who was not under her watch go into sudden distress. She alerted the necessary people immediately and everyone commented how her quick-thinking and leap into action resulted in saving the patient’s life. It is this type of attention to detail and professionalism on the job that we have come to expect from all our Patient Watch staff and especially from Alice. Excellent work Alice!
Performance of the Month
Scott Wenn - Century Place
Earlier this month, Scott made one helluva great catch! During a regular patrol at Century Place, he discovered a major water leak on one of the floors and followed procedure to rectify the incident immediately by first contacting building maintenance, then the supervisors etc. Some might say – including himself! – that he was simply following post orders and procedures; however, we find it worthy to recognize him for an award as his diligence and thorough patrolling meant we have managed to maintain a consistent service at the site, for which the client and staff are more than grateful. Scott, you saved a lot of taxpayers’ money to the City by catching this leak in the early stages, and you not only pleased the City Advisor with your superb performance but us as well! Keep up the good work Scott.
Unsung Hero

Performer of the Month
Safi Rana – Mobile One
There’s a lot to be said about this particular Paladin Security Officer’s perfect performance! Safi’s keen eye for detail and due diligence have been extremely beneficial for our Mobile department here in Calgary. He is 100% dedicated to ensuring his night shift Officers perform their duties to the best of their abilities and, from the very beginning of his time with Paladin, understood the importance of extensive patrols and detailed and accurate report writing. Safi recently became aware of an issue at a contract and proceeded with an investigation which led to its swift resolution. This is the kind of attention to detail and proactive approach we’ve come to know and expect from our Paladin team members Safi so good job and keep up the good work!
Performance of the Month
Richard Therrien – Zone Supervisor, Hospital Contract
Richard has been nothing short of exemplary since his first day with Paladin. Each and every shift that Richard has worked with us throughout his time here, he has been instrumental in ensuring that there is no lost coverage, that our Officers are appropriately placed, and that nursing staff is happy with our service levels. Last month, Richard went above and beyond to ensure all shifts were filled and short notice coverage adhered to by rearranging schedules to ensure everyone had an appropriate break but himself. Your commitment is something that every Paladin Security Officer aspires to Rich and we appreciate your loyalty to the Paladin family. You’re a star!!
Unsung Hero
Rajwinder Pandher – Mobile Two
While doing his nightly patrols recently, Rajwinder uncovered a potential issue with a vacant multi-million dollar house. The client had asked us to keep a good eye on the house and to ensure interior and exterior patrols were done nightly so, one night while Rajwinder performed an extensive patrol through the house including the basement bathroom, he discovered a leak which could lead to thousands of dollars worth of damage. Rajwinder broke out his plumber skills and successfully stopped the leak on the spot. The client was delighted and commended Rajwinder thoroughness and resourcefulness and we couldn’t agree more Rajwinder – you really are a jack of all trades!
Brandon Winners!
Performer of the Month
Kayla Henton, Royal Oak Inn & Suites
Last month, Kayla was patrolling the 5th floor of the Royal Oak Inn & Suites when she was approached by a male who told her that a small fire had just broken out near the roof access. Kayla radioed for a fire extinguisher and began an investigation which soon revealed that the man in question was actually the culprit who had started the fire. The fire was extinguished and, thanks to Kayla’s due diligence and keen investigative skills, local police were able to make an arrest for arson. Kayla, your attention to detail perhaps saved the lives of hotel guests and most certainly avoided extensive damage caused to the hotel so great work Kayla, keep it up!!
Performance of the Month
Donna Kiryliuk, Maple Leaf Fresh Foods & James Kiyewakan, Shoppers Mall
Donna loves her job at the Maple Leaf site and can always be relied upon to cover short notice shifts if needed. Donna has also made herself available for every holiday, just to make sure her colleagues can enjoy some family time. Now that’s selfishness! Donna further provides training to her fellow Officers over at the main building and is respected by her peers and the client alike. You can’t ask for better than that!
Over at Shoppers Mall, James is an equally consistent performer who never once complains when tasked with extra work. January had been an unusually busy month for store movements with Christmas tenants leaving and new tenants arriving, which has meant a lot of extra work for our security team. Not only did James ensure that these extras were completed on time as required by Administration, he did so without affecting his normal duties which is to be commended. Two very deserving Performance of the Month winners this month we think you’ll agree!!
Unsung Hero
Joe Armstrong, Victoria Inn Hotel
Joe has recently taken on the Security Officer role at the Victoria Inn and, even though he came on board at the last minute, he was not afraid to pull up his sleeves and get his hands dirty to ensure the client was happy. Joe worked throughout the Christmas holidays and did not complain once about having to give up time with his family as his focus was turned directly on the job at hand. Joe, your dedication is second to none and we’re glad to have you as part of our team. Good job!

Performance of the Month
Kevin Bellaire - WECHC Glengary
While conducting a foot patrol at his site recently, Kevin noticed smoke coming from one of the residential apartments. He banged on the door to try to get the occupant's attention and felt to see if it was hot. He continued banging and shouting and his efforts finally paid off as he work the sleeping resident who had slept through the fire. Kevin, you played a crucial role in preventing what could have been a tragic situation had it not been for your persistence and fast reactions. Good job!
Unsung Hero
Jeff Jonat - LG Brampton
Jeff has been consistenly going above and beyond to improve the quality of our service at LG Brampton, with one very special incident illustrating this commitment. Recently, Jeff noticed an incident report from a previous shift about a suspicious individual who had claimed he was from an insurance company performing an investigation of the facility. Jeff asked the client who said there was no investigation so, at the end of his shift, Jeff decided to go to the insurance company to check if they had an employee by that name, they did not. This was then reported to Police under fraudulent pretenses and the client was blown away with Jeff taking his own time to investigate further. Jeff was modest about the whole situation, saying as the Supervisor he feels it's his responsibility to look out for the client and his fellow Officers, so we really must thank you Jeff - we simply couldnt ask for more!!
Victoria Winners!

Performance of the Month
Roger Desjardins - Jack Davis Building
While on shift recently, the client at the Jack Davis Building called to inform Roger that an international student of hers had got lost downtown and was quite shaken up. The client had directed the girl to go to Roger’s site at 1810 Blanshard to be picked up. However, while the client simply wanted to make Roger aware that the student would be waiting outside the building, Roger went above and beyond in the course of his duties to track down the girl, bring her inside the building, warm her up and calm her down until the client arrived to collect her. He assured the girl that she was now safe and made sure she was no longer afraid. The client was so impressed with this kindness that she emailed Roger’s CSM expressing her gratitude and extending her sincere thanks. Roger couldn’t have done more in this situation and, by one act of attentiveness, has managed to make a lasting impression on the client and her new international student – a stranger in Victoria who greatly appreciated the helping hand that Paladin extended to her when she was out of her depth. You’re truly a Paladin superstar Roger, well done.

Performer of the Month
Evelina Parr Peterson - AHS Provincial Parking Services
Although still relatively new to her AHS Provincial Parking Services position, so far Evie has been extremely thorough with her duties and cooperative to any duties assigned to her by her Client Service Manager outside of her regular patrols, stall counts, etc. Evie's compassion for all clientele and staff at NLRH is commendable. Parking enforcement is definitely not an easy task, however, Evie consistently carries out her daily duties without complaint and always with a very upbeat disposition which is exactly what’s needed when dealing so intently with the public. Not only that but Evie is always dressed immaculately and wears her Paladin uniform with enormous pride. We really couldn’t ask for a better woman for the job, well done Evie..
Performance of the Month
Chandelle Quilty - Alberta Health Services
On shift recently at AHS here in Fort Mc Murray, Chandelle was doing her evening duties as usual when the Emergency Department called in two code responses. Chandelle jumped into action and went above and beyond her normal duties to ensure the nursing staff, doctors and other emergency services personnel were catered to and had everything they needed at their disposal. Afterwards, everyone commented on how Chandelle had made their jobs that much easier and how she was such a great asset to the Paladin team and to everyone working at the hospital. Excellent work Chandelle, keep making us proud!
Unsung Hero
Rebecca Humphries - Syncrude
Last month, Rebecca stepped up to help out her team mate on Console in what her CSM described as a most professional manner, with unfailing patience and encouragement. Rebecca herself was challenged this particular night juggling the demands of the Console when she saw that her fellow Officer was having difficulty completing the paperwork for the night. Without hesitation, she took her colleague aside and proceeded to help her through every step of the process. For the remainder of the evening, both ladies worked in tandem to ensure that the shift went off smoothly and without incident, and we must say it’s exhilarating to see such a perfect example of Paladin teamwork in action. Well done Rebecca
